SGS LEGAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME – 2024
Bala Mandir conducts the Shri S Govind Swaminadhan Legal Education Programme in memory of its former President of BMKT – a very eminent lawyer highly respected for his forthrightness and integrity. The programme aims to create a positive impact in the minds of senior school children with regard to adherence of law and practice as profession.
This Legal Education Programme, 8th in its series, was held in the Bala Mandir premises on November 9, 2024. The topic for discussion was ‘Careers in Law’ which was presided over by Mr Justice Anand Venkatesh. It was attended by almost 50 students of Class 10 and 11, both from Bala Mandir and city schools, along with 35 representatives from the legal fraternity.
The format of the programme this year was slightly different – many representatives from the legal fraternity participated right from the planning phase, were present at the venue, and helped conduct the event. There was also a panel discussion / group discussion – which was introduced this year.
The programme started with the customary ‘Remembering Govind’ and the Chief Guest’s address to the gathering, which was an inspiring one. This was followed by an introduction to the topic of the day. A panel of eminent lawyers then gave an insight into various aspects of law like – Law and Protection of the Environment, Law and Protection of Labour and Human Rights, Law and Journalism, Commercial Law and Taxation, Intellectual Property Law and Law and Other Things. Post this, the attendees and the students were directed to assigned tables where the experts, assisted by rapporteurs were available for any further discussions / queries from the attendees.
The Chief Guest and the attendees approached each table and spoke with the children which made the entire session interactive and lively. The rapporteurs from each panel presented their views and reports on the interactions where they shared frequently asked questions and answers.
The children were eager to know several details which were addressed by the legal fraternity, both senior and junior. They were advised not only on legal matters, but also about approach to life in general, which was a learning experience for the students.
Refreshments were provided to the participants, and all the students received Certificate of Participation.
